Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Gown

Choosing_the_gowntnAfter finding the man that makes your heart flutter, the next most important ingredient for your big day is finding the dress that makes you feel like a princess! Choosing your gown is one of the best parts of planning your wedding. It should be a fun experience shared with the close woman in your life. At Savvy Brides we often see the great bonding shared between a mother and a daughter or sisters and friends when they come in to choose their preloved second hand wedding dress.

When choosing your dress it is important to keep a few things in mind.

The Wedding Style

If you are having a formal wedding or a church wedding you may want to wear a more formal gown that is on the conservative and classic style. If you are having a beach or garden wedding a slimline gown in a light fabric will suit the occasion. You don't want to be dragging a heavily beaded train through the beach sand! While it is important to keep all this in mind, also remember that you are the bride and it is your big. You can't really be overdressed for your own wedding. So don't rule a dress out just because it doesn't seem to fit entirely with the style of your wedding.

The Season

Try to consider the season of your wedding when you buy your dress. A sheer light gown may leave your shivering at your winter wedding and similarly a thick satin with layers and tulle may not be the best idea for a outdoor wedding in the middle of summer!

Does the gown flatter?

This is your big day, you want to look your absolute best! Before you choose your gown, consider what parts of your body you love the most (and the ones you like least). Try find a gown that highlights all your good bits and flatters your bad. Wedding gowns are normally the best made piece of clothing you will ever own so it should make your body look great! Some ruching across the stomach can make your stomach look as flat as possible or a dress that just skims the hips in the right way can shave inches off your hips and bum. Make sure you try a number of different styles to try and find the one that flatters your figure most.

Dress for yourself (and your fiancé)

I have often heard stories of brides that have sadly been convinced by their mother, sister or pushy shop assistant that a particular gown is 'the one'. Only to later realise that they don't feel comfortable or beautiful in the dress. Make sure this does not happen to you! You are the one wearing the dress and you are the one that will look back at photos of yourself for the rest of your life. When you have the dress on, you will know if it feels right. Listen to your gut instinct. Also, don't forget, you want to make your fiancé's jaw drop as you walk down that aisle. If he hates huge fluffy dresses, steer away from these. Although people will tell you to dress for yourself and it is not a very feminist idea, the day is about you and your fiancé and your love for each other. Of course he will love you no matter what you are wearing, but no bride would deny that they want to make their husband weak in the knees when they catch their first glimpse of their bride.

Stay Close to the Classics

We all know that fashion trends move faster than a half price Vera Wang at a sample sale! We also know that that you will be looking at these photos for the rest of your life. There is no need to make sure that your wedding dress is the cutting edge of fashion. You want to be able to look back and admire how great you both looked, not cringe and think "what was I thinking?!?!". Of course there are lovely wedding dress trends like one shoulder or floral details that can make your classic dress look modern, but try and steer clear of gowns that are high fashion and something you may regret in time.

At Savvy Brides we see so many girls finding their dream dress. Despite the style or the bride, one thing is constant, the look on the bride-to-be's face when she puts on 'the one'. It will flatter your figure, it will suit your wedding and it will be everything you have dreamed of and more. The best part? Just like with the man, you will just know when it is the gown.
